Explains the organization of the periodic table, including groups, periods, and general trends in periodicity.

What students will learn

  • State the historical background and arrangement of the modern Periodic Table.
  • Define periods (horizontal rows) and groups (vertical columns) in the Periodic Table.
  • Identify the four blocks of elements (s, p, d, f blocks).
  • Describe the general trends in periodicity across a period and down a group (atomic radius, ionization energy, electronegativity).
  • Relate the electronic configuration of an element to its position on the Periodic Table.
